Reminiscin' on hiphop: A little walk down (my) musical memory lane...
Not many people know this, but I grew up with hiphop. Since about 1987 when I attended my first concert in KB Hallen. Run DMC when they were getting large, Public Enemy when they definitely weren’t, and another guy (don’t remember who).
Tripped over a Rock Steady Crew video earlier. Spurred some reminiscing. So here’s a little trip down my musical education, from some of the movies I grew up watching.
I know music changes. Styles change. Attitudes change. The world changes.
But when I think of what hiphop used to be about, and what it’s evolved to, it saddens me. The messages of the oldschool, the “don’t fight, battle !” attitude, the enthusiasm – and hiphop as a way of life. More or less all gone. Now it’s almost always about money, violence, sex, cars, bling. Not feelin’ it. At all. I want the political messages back. I want the positive attitudes back. I want the “we CAN change the world for the better !” attitude back.
Anyway, enjoy – this is from way back in the day, when hiphop truly mattered. Hiphop, I salute you !
